Allerdale GDF Community Partnership Newsletter – Issue 2

March 24, 2022

Welcome to the Allerdale Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) Community Partnership newsletter.

In this newsletter, we wanted to let you know about our campaign to recruit more members to the Community Partnership, to ensure we are reflective of our community.

Mary Bradley – Interim Chair

We also wanted to remind you about the Community Investment Funding which is now available to support local projects, schemes or initiatives that provide economic opportunities, enhance the environment, or improve community wellbeing.

More information about Community Investment Funding and getting involved with the Community Partnership is contained in this newsletter.

We would be very grateful for any help in sharing these messages through your friends and family, community, professional networks and social media channels.

Minutes of all Allerdale GDF Community Partnership and Working Group meetings can be found on the ‘Resources’ page of our website under ‘Meeting Documents’.

Join the Allerdale GDF Community Partnership

Our campaign to recruit more members and build a Partnership that is diverse and reflective of our community.

Applications are now open for local people to apply to join the Allerdale GDF Community Partnership, as we work to broaden the conversation about whether Allerdale could be the right place to build a Geological Disposal Facility, or GDF.

We are eager to hear from any local individuals with experience and knowledge of the Search Area, to help us build a Community Partnership that is both diverse and reflective of our community.

Members will ensure that people in or affected by the Search Area have continued opportunities to engage, be involved and have their questions answered, and will work with the community to develop a vision for the area.

We are also inviting local people to join our general interest and topic-based stakeholder forums and are encouraging expressions of interest through the same application process.

Applications for any or all of these roles can be made on our website, or by contacting the Community Partnership on 0300 369 0000 to request an application pack.

The closing date for applications is Friday 8th April at 12 noon.

Community Investment Funding

Grant funding of up to £1 million annually has been made available by central government for the Allerdale GDF Community Partnership as it participates in the siting process for a Geological Disposal Facility.

The grants can be used to fund projects, schemes or initiatives that:

  • provide economic opportunities
  • enhance the natural and built environment, or
  • improve community wellbeing.

Funding will rise to up to £2.5 million per year if the GDF programme in Allerdale progresses to technical investigations requiring deep boreholes.

Community Investment Funding recognises the long-term nature of the Geological Disposal Facility project, and that the benefits associated with jobs, infrastructure and major investment may not materialise until the project has been in operation for several years. The Allerdale community will initially have access of up to £1 million per year.

The fund is now open for applications.
