Workington Music Festival
£5,000

Project Overview

Workington Music Festival is an annual event that provides a social environment for those involved and increases skills and education in The Arts of Speech, Drama, Music and Dance. They were awarded £5,000 towards festival costs.

The Music festival is the oldest festival in the north of England and possibly the oldest of its kind in the United Kingdom, outside of Wales. It is organised by a committee and run entirely by volunteers.

The Dance section is held during the October school half-term, and the Music and Verse section is held in early November each year. The festival supports local businesses and is held in The Carnegie Theatre, Workington.

The 2022 dance festival covered Solo, Duets, Trios and Group work in Tap, Ballet, Modern, Lyrical Modern, Character, National, and Song and Dance. They also held IDTA Miss Dance of Great Britain Heat where the winner went forward to the finals being held in the Winter Gardens, Blackpool in June 2023, also TDCI |Championships where winners of Junior and Senior sections go forward to Finals being held in Fleetwood in January 2023. Both of these Championships lead to Professional Opportunities.

The vocal section covered solo, duet and choir classes of all age groups from Nursery, Primary, Junior Schools through to over 18 years of age and over, with the most senior performer being over 80 years of age. The instrumental section included pianoforte, violin and steel drums.

These events provided a platform for local performers to showcase their talents and develop their technique and skills, with adjudicators who offered professional advice and encouragement.
